Who

A.J. Nosorožec

The art group A.J. Nosorožec was formed in Prague in 2019 and is still based there today. The group consists of Anna Gumboldt-Romanova and Semion Kulikov. A.J. Nosorožec represents the initials of someone third between them. In their projects, A.J. Nosorožec works with real or fictional stories, objects, sounds, and images. Most often, these are quiet performances, meant for small, intimate settings. Sometimes, we perform a piece only once. We may go long periods without performing at all. At times, we choose our audience ourselves. Sometimes, we focus solely on animation or scenography. But we are always open to exploring other formats with collaborators.

Anna Gumboldt-Romanova

I mostly work as a director, animator, scenographer, and illustrator. Since 2016, I’ve been living and working in Prague, studying at DAMU, in the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre. In both theater and animation, I am particularly drawn to the theme of overcoming (oneself, circumstances, pain, violence, stereotypes, death). I often choose objects as my creative partners: everyday items, toys, old devices, natural materials.

As a commercial artist, I primarily create scenography, small puppets, or objects, and occasionally work on illustration and animation. My personal projects are mostly co-authored with my husband. I enjoy theater that borders on anthropology, live sound, and projects dedicated to specific people. I was involved in the creation of the first PYL projects and continue to collaborate with PYL and other theater companies. I move between illustration and animation, stepping away from the stage and public life, and then returning. A seasoned introvert.

Semion Kulikov

I’m a media artist. I hold a Bc. and CSc. in IT in Economics, but my career has steadily drifted toward the humanities. In my childhood, I used to draw flipbooks in school papers and had a passion for photography. I’ve worked in graphic and book design and spent 8 years designing user interfaces and UX (which I still take on from time to time). I am a graduate of Sergey Maximishin’s photojournalism course at the Moscow School of Visual Arts.

Since 2013, I have been actively involved in creating a wide variety of video content. I’ve shot and edited countless interviews, commercials, corporate videos, and theater production trailers. I have a passion for stop motion.

Since 2016, I’ve been living in Prague, where I’ve expanded my storytelling methods to include performative arts. Together with Anna Gumboldt, we create our own theatrical performances and design scenography for various projects.
